What Is DVA Rent Assistance?

DVA Rent Assistance is a supplementary fortnightly payment to help eligible recipients of means-tested income support cover private rental costs. It is only available to those receiving specific means-tested income support payments from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), such as the Service Pension, Income Support Supplement or Veteran Payment.

This support is only available to those receiving means-tested income support and cannot be claimed as a standalone benefit. If you’re not receiving one of these qualifying forms of income support, you won’t be eligible for rent assistance.

The amount provided depends on several factors, including your rental costs, whether meals are included and your living situation. Understanding how income support and rent thresholds work together is key to a successful claim.

Who Can Claim Rent Assistance?

You may be eligible for DVA Rent Assistance if:

  • You receive a means-tested income support payment (Service Pension, Income Support Supplement or Veteran Payment), and
  • You pay private rent or board and lodging (excluding government housing), and
  • Your rent exceeds the minimum threshold required to trigger a payment.

Rent assistance is not available to those living in government housing, residential aged care or receiving subsidised accommodation. Full-time students under eligible DVA education schemes may also qualify if they rent privately and meet full-time attendance requirements.

DVA may require proof of your rental arrangement—such as a lease, rent receipts or a letter from your landlord. If you rent from a family member, additional documentation may be required to verify the arrangement.

How Much Can You Receive?

Rent assistance is only paid when rent exceeds a minimum threshold. Payments are calculated based on the amount above that threshold and whether you're single or partnered.

  • Singles: Maximum of $212.00 per fortnight if rent exceeds $149.60
  • Couples (combined): Maximum of $199.80 per fortnight if rent exceeds $242.40

If your rent includes meals (such as in a boarding setup), DVA automatically deducts one-third of the amount to account for the meal component. Only the accommodation portion of your rent counts toward the calculation.

Unlike many other DVA benefits, you do not need to submit a separate application form for Rent Assistance. If you are already receiving a qualifying means-tested income support payment, your eligibility for rent assistance is assessed automatically.

To receive this payment:

  1. Ensure your rental details are current by contacting DVA directly or through MyService.
  2. Provide proof of your rent, including a formal lease, rental receipts or a letter from your landlord.
  3. Report any changes in your rent, address or household within 14 days, as this may affect your payment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria and your rent is high enough, DVA will include the Rent Assistance payment with your regular income support payment.

You do not need to complete a claim form unless DVA specifically requests one—for example, when additional information is required for complex cases.
