Yes, osteoarthritis is one of the most commonly accepted conditions under MRCA. If your joint degeneration is linked to your ADF service, whether from physical demands, injuries or repetitive strain, you may be entitled to permanent impairment entitlements under MRCA. Yes. DVA assesses your whole-of-person impairment, which means all accepted conditions and affected joints are combined to determine your total impairment rating. Veterans with osteoarthritis in knees, hips and spine may result in a higher combined whole-of-person impairment rating, depending on individual assessment. DVA uses Statements of Principles to establish the connection between your condition and service. Factors like physical training, operational duties, previous injuries and repetitive joint stress can all support your claim. Impairment points for osteoarthritis depend on which areas are affected (for example, your lower limbs, spine or upper limbs) and how severely your movement and function are limited. DVA uses its GARP M to assess each affected body region and then combines your accepted conditions into a single whole-of-person impairment rating. Permanent impairment entitlements are determined by your impairment points, lifestyle rating and type of service under MRCA. Depending on your impairment rating and service type, different payment structures may be available under the legislation. The level of entitlement reflects the impairment rating assigned following assessment under the relevant legislative framework. If your condition deteriorates, you can apply for a reclassification of your permanent impairment. DVA will reassess your impairment points, and if they’ve increased by at least five points, you may become eligible for an increase in your permanent impairment entitlements. Once your osteoarthritis is accepted as service-related, you become eligible for a Veteran White Card covering treatment for that condition.
