Absolutely. Many veterans have bruxism as a secondary condition linked to PTSD, anxiety or other mental health conditions. When your primary mental health condition is accepted, bruxism can be claimed as a related condition and the impairment points from both conditions combine, which may affect how your entitlements are assessed under DVA. Yes. DVA recognises bruxism as a service-related condition, and you may be eligible for entitlements and treatment support. Because DVA classifies bruxism as a mental health condition, your claim will need to demonstrate how service-related stress, anxiety or other factors caused or worsened your teeth grinding. Bruxism itself doesn't have a specific impairment point value in DVA's tables. Instead, DVA assesses related conditions, such as temporomandibular disorder (TMD), which is rated under the musculoskeletal tables based on jaw function and pain. If you have an underlying mental health condition like PTSD, those points combine under GARP M's assessment system. Refer to our DVA impairment points table guide.

This is especially true when TMD assessments and multiple related conditions are involved. Under MRCA, entitlements are determined based on the total impairment points from bruxism and any related conditions. You generally need at least 10 impairment points to qualify for initial MRCA permanent impairment entitlements. Conditions like TMD, dental damage and underlying mental health conditions may all contribute to your overall impairment rating when they are properly documented and accepted. Dental damage, such as cracked, worn or broken teeth (also known as dental attrition), can be claimed separately from bruxism. If your bruxism is accepted by DVA, you may be eligible for treatment, including a mouth guard (occlusal splint). In many cases, this can be funded through your Veteran White Card when bruxism is listed as an accepted condition, subject to clinical need and DVA approval.
