Expert Assistance With Your Insomnia Claim
We start by talking through your situation, your service history, when your insomnia began, and how it affects your day-to-day life. We'll explain how eligibility is assessed and how it may apply to your situation, what the claims process involves, and what evidence DVA will need. There's no obligation and no cost. Our job at this stage is to give you clear, honest answers so you can decide if you want to move forward with us.
Once you engage our services, we gather your existing medical evidence and prepare all required documentation to lodge your DVA claim. For clients whose insomnia requires specialist assessment, we connect you with suitable medical providers in your area who understand DVA's requirements.
After lodgement, we liaise with DVA on your behalf and assist with providing the information required to assess your claim. You don't need to chase DVA or navigate the back-and-forth; that's our role. We keep you informed and continue supporting you through the assessment process.

My experience with Veterans First Consulting has been superb. Had I not made the initial call then I would still be suffering with medical issues. Their knowledge of and experience in dealing with DVA is second to none and without their assistance and guidance I would not be in the position that I am today.

Leaving the ADF is very daunting, especially if it is due to medical matters. Veterans First consulting were there to support me from the very first phone call. I would have never been able to navigate through all the doctor’s appointments and discharge obligations without their help.

They walked me through the whole initial liability process and all conditions were accepted. During the permanent impairment stage, the Veterans First team were easy to talk to and I received maximum compensation. I was particularly impressed that when I asked to speak to the Director he called me within a few hours.

Why Veterans Choose Us for Insomnia Claims
Insomnia claims can be complex because DVA needs clear medical evidence, a proper diagnosis, and service evidence that supports the claim. We know how DVA evaluates insomnia under MRCA, whether it stands alone or sits alongside PTSD, anxiety, or another accepted condition. A clear and well-prepared claim can help present your situation accurately and avoid preventable issues.
In some cases, the impact of insomnia on daily functioning may not be fully reflected if it is underreported during assessment. We understand how impairment points are allocated under MRCA for sleep disorders and how lifestyle ratings apply when poor sleep affects your work, relationships, and quality of life.
Managing a DVA claim while dealing with disrupted sleep is the last thing you need on your plate. We support you through each step, including documentation, liaising with DVA, and connecting you with appropriate specialists, so you can focus on your health. Our team is independent and focused on supporting you through the claims process.

Yes, if your insomnia is connected to your ADF service, you may be able to lodge a DVA claim. For service after 30 June 2004, claims are generally made under MRCA for initial liability and, where applicable, permanent impairment compensation. Insomnia can be accepted as a primary condition in its own right or as a condition secondary to an already-accepted service injury or illness, such as PTSD, anxiety, or depression. Eligibility depends on your individual service history and medical circumstances. Read more in our DVA Mental Health Claim guide.
The strongest evidence for a service connection typically includes a clear diagnosis, a documented sleep history, and service and medical evidence linking your condition to a recognised factor under the chronic insomnia disorder Statement of Principles. Where specialist evidence is needed, the relevant specialist is a sleep physician or psychiatrist. If your insomnia developed secondary to an accepted condition like PTSD, the pathway is usually more straightforward. We help you identify and pull together the right evidence. View more in our DVA Initial Liability guide.
Insomnia is assessed under the GARP M and rated based on severity and functional impact. The number of impairment points varies depending on how significantly the condition affects your daily life, work capacity, and relationships. When insomnia co-occurs with other conditions like PTSD or anxiety, all accepted conditions are assessed together using the MRCA combining formula. See our DVA Impairment Points Table guide.
Yes. Many veterans we work with have insomnia alongside PTSD, anxiety or depression. Sleep apnoea may also be claimed if relevant, but insomnia needs to be assessed as a separate condition and not simply explained by sleep apnoea or another sleep-wake disorder. Claiming all relevant conditions together gives DVA the full picture of how your service has affected your health. Each accepted condition contributes to your overall impairment assessment under MRCA. Discover more in our MRCA Permanent Impairment guide.
The DVA claims process for permanent impairment typically takes 12 months or longer from lodgement to determination. The full process from your first contact with us to a final outcome generally runs 18 to 24 months. Timeline can vary depending on the complexity of your claim, DVA workloads, and how quickly medical assessments are scheduled. Working with us from the start can help keep your documentation organised and complete. Read our DVA Claims Timeframe guide.
Treatment coverage depends on whether your insomnia is accepted by DVA as a service-related condition. If insomnia is accepted and you hold a DVA White Card, treatment for the accepted condition is covered. Gold Card holders receive coverage for all clinically necessary treatment regardless of service connection. Eligible veterans can also access Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC) for mental health treatment without needing to prove service connection, but treatment for insomnia itself depends on your accepted conditions or other treatment-card eligibility. For more details, see our DVA Non-Liability Health Cover guide.
Yes. If your insomnia developed as a consequence of an already accepted condition, such as PTSD, causing hyperarousal and broken sleep, you can lodge an additional claim for insomnia as a secondary condition. If your accepted conditions have worsened and increased your impairment, you may also be able to claim additional permanent impairment compensation. We'll review your current accepted conditions and explain the available pathways based on your circumstances. See our What Can I Claim from the DVA? Guide.
We don't charge any upfront fees for our initial consultation, and we clearly explain our fee structure before you decide to proceed. Our focus is on providing specialist DVA claims support, and all costs are discussed and agreed with you in advance.
