Skin cancer permanent impairment claims are rarely quick. From lodgement to final decision, DVA claims typically take 18–24 months, especially when medical assessments and specialist reports are required. The permanent impairment decision itself often takes 12 months or longer once your documentation and medical evidence have been lodged. Having complete, accurate evidence from the start helps reduce avoidable delays and we will prepare your claim thoroughly and in line with DVA requirements. Impairment points for skin cancer depend on the type, severity, treatment required and whether you have scarring or ongoing effects. Multiple skin cancers or recurring treatment can increase your points and under MRCA, you usually need a minimum of 10 impairment points from your skin cancer and any other accepted conditions combined to qualify for permanent impairment benefits. Yes. If your skin cancer is linked to significant outdoor sun exposure during military service, DVA can recognise your condition and provide the entitlements and treatment support you need. This includes melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and other sun-related skin conditions.
Once your skin cancer is accepted as service-related, DVA covers treatment through your White Card or Gold Card which includes specialist appointments, surgery and ongoing monitoring. You may also access cancer treatment through Non-Liability Health Care while your claim is being processed.
