You may be eligible if you've been diagnosed with adjustment disorder by a psychiatrist and the condition developed in response to a stressor connected to your ADF service. Under MRCA, your claim must meet the relevant Statement of Principles criteria, which require that emotional or behavioural symptoms develop within three months of the stressor and cause clinically significant distress or impairment in your daily life. Yes. DVA provides fully funded mental health treatment through Non-Liability Health Care (NLHC) for eligible veterans. This includes current and former full-time ADF members, reservists with at least one day of Continuous Full-Time Service (CFTS) and some reservists without CFTS who meet specific service requirements, such as qualifying for disaster relief, border protection or serious service-related training. You don't need to prove your adjustment disorder is service-related to access this support. You simply apply for, or use, a Veteran White Card that covers mental health treatment. Adjustment disorder develops in response to identifiable stressors but doesn't require exposure to the same level of traumatic events as PTSD. If your stressors fall under Category 2 (ongoing negative life events rather than life-threatening trauma), your condition may be assessed as adjustment disorder rather than PTSD. DVA assesses adjustment disorder using impairment points under the GARP M framework, combined with a lifestyle rating to understand how your condition affects daily activities, work and relationships. DVA typically processes initial liability claims in around 12 months, and permanent impairment claims can take an additional 12 months or longer, depending on the complexity of your condition. Most claims currently take about 18 to 24 months in total to process. Mental health claims, including adjustment disorder, can be prioritised in some circumstances under DVA’s priority processing guidelines, particularly where there is serious injury, illness or risk of self-harm.
